Storing Kids’ Shoes Between Seasons: A Parent’s Guide

Storing Kids’ Shoes Between Seasons: A Parent’s Guide

As mums, we know how quickly the seasons (and our kids’ shoe sizes!) can change. One minute they’re splashing in summer sandals, the next they’re bundled up in winter boots. But what happens to the shoes they’re not wearing right now?

Storing your child’s shoes the right way helps them last longer, keeps them looking great, and means they’re ready for the next season — or for a younger sibling, if appropriate. At Surefit, we’ve been making quality children’s shoes since 1984, and we want every pair to go the distance. Here’s how.

    1. Always Clean and Dry First

Before tucking shoes away, give them a gentle clean. A damp cloth will usually do the trick for leather styles, while a soft brush can remove dirt from suede or canvas.

Make sure they’re completely dry before storing — even a little moisture can lead to mould, odours, or damage to the materials. You'll find more tips on our caring for leather shoes blog.

    2. Maintain Their Shape

Kids’ shoes work hard, and they need a little help to hold their form while resting in storage. Simply stuff them with tissue paper or scrunched newspaper before packing them away. This will help keep the toe box and heel structured and prevent creasing.

    3. Pick the Right Storage Option

Plastic bags may seem convenient, but they can trap moisture and cause shoes to deteriorate. Instead, choose a cloth bag or the original shoe box to allow shoes to breathe. This helps avoid mildew and keeps leather and linings in good condition.

    4. Think Ahead to Next Season

If your child has outgrown the shoes, consider donating them while they’re still in good condition. Passing on well-loved (but not worn-out) shoes is a great way to reduce waste and support other families. For shoes that have moulded heavily to your child’s foot, though, it’s best to retire them — little feet need the right fit and support for healthy growth.

    5. Invest in Shoes Worth Storing

Of course, all this care is worth it when shoes are made to last. At Surefit, we design every pair with premium materials, wide toe boxes, and supportive soles so kids can move naturally and comfortably. With the right care, our shoes can easily last a whole season and beyond.

    Final Tip

Seasonal shoe storage doesn’t have to be a chore — just a few simple steps can extend the life of your child’s footwear. Quality shoes are an investment in their comfort and development, and a little extra care helps protect that investment.
